Growing
up as a young lad in the seventies and eighties most if not all
kids were into the traditional sports such as Football, Basketball,
Baseball, and Hockey. I was one of those kids and it was fun, but
there was a greater passion. BMX entered my life at age 10 (1980).
Good ol' Dad saw that the fire to play traditional sports was quickly
leaving his oldest son and picked up a BMX racing brochure at a
local track. He presented it to me and life has never been the same
since. We went to the last race of the season to take a look at what
BMX racing was. Even as soon as I walked into the main entrance
it was clear that this was for me. The bikes, the uniforms, riders
everywhere and of course the jumps proved to me that this sport
was for me .
Throughout that offseason I worked with Dad sweeping floors at the
shop to build the BMX bike "needed" to be competitive.
My first race was unbelievable. With a lead going into the last
stretch I fell and ended up with third place. Third Place, that
was enough to put the taste of BMX in me. In the next three years,
Saturday afternoons were more of a religious day for me than any
traditional observation. Everything I worked toward Sunday through
Friday was put on display Saturdays at Noon. 1984, Junior high ends
and with that so does Racing. Freestyle BMX emerges and my love
for BMX intensifies. Where with racing I would spend the afternoons
riding, Freestyle consumed me for entire days one after another.
Freestyle broke down the limits inherent in Racing. You could do
anything.
There
was no rules, no set time or place, and best of all no limits. Being
a very creative and analytical minded individual my love for BMX
was now focused on learning.Living in central Massachusetts I was
fortunate to have been exposed to the talents of The Mountain Dew/GT
Trick team. Reading magazines was essential but having these professionals
in my area was monumental. The team performed frequently in our
area and we ate up every opportunity to learn and enjoy. Little
did I know that in two years that would be me.
