BMXStunts:
Tell us about yourself
Jeff: I started riding freestyle when I was in 7th grade. I saw
kids from the high school ride one day and decided I wanted to learn.
They were riding Hutch Trick Stars and Haro's. It was back in 1985.
I got a GT Pro Performer soon after and have been riding since.
I competed mostly with flatland between the Middle School and High
School years. I entered local New England contests because I didn't
have the money to travel to all he AFA contests back then. I recently
moved to San Diego to do Bike shows with Dennis Langlais and Perfection
on Wheels. That is what I am currently doing.
BMXStunts:
Who do you ride with?
Jeff: When I am in Connecticut, I ride with Mike Macisco, Ed Simpsom
when I can find him, Plano when he is not working out, Paul, Sal
Coppola, Jay Zacks, Matt Margolis and Mike Delucia when he has a
bike. When I practice, I usually ride at the beach by myself. The
less distractions the better. When I ride with my friends, we usually
ride the ramp at Macisco's or Downtown New Haven. Around Yale University.
BMXStunts:
Have any riders influenced you?
Jeff: I don't really know. If there is any rider I respect the most
it would be either Dennis McCoy or Matt Hoffman. Dennis is a great
all around rider and he has been riding at a top pro level for so
long. Matt Hoffman on the other hand just pushed everybody to ride
harder than ever. He pushed himself so hard so quickly, he forced
other ramp riders to follow and progressed the whole scene. One
rider that did influence me was Kevin Martin. He was the only local
rider I knew from Connecticut to make it in the magazines on a regular
basis. He was always cool to me when I was young. He made me realize
that I could be riding at the same level as all the pros someday.
BMXStunts:
What kind of music do you listen to?
Jeff: A lot of Rock lately. My favorite bands are Pearl Jam, Alice
in Chains and Gargantua Soul. I seem to like all that old Seattle
type music. Soundgarden Etc... I also like a lot of local bands
such as Seed Cycle and Greedy Edna. I like music that has a lot
of acoustics too. Like John Denver, Jim Croce, etc...
BMXStunts:
What are some of your other hobbies?
Jeff: I like editing videos and working with bands. When I am not
riding, I am usually Surfing, Swimming, working out or running around
Pacific Beach with my friend Karl Zeilik. I like to read books,
but not fiction. I like to learn. I read book like the ones you
read in College. Books on Math, Computers or sciences. I am not
the type to sit down and read a story someone made up. I feel that
is wasting my time.
BMXStunts:
Do you have a favorite riding experience?
Jeff: Probably riding with Dave Voelker on my ramp after a GT/Dyno
show back in 89. That was a lot of fun. He came to our ramp after
a show with Dino Deluca and Brett Hernandez after being invited
by Kevin Martin. Dave hung out, played Hacky Sack and went higher
on the ramp than anyone had ever gone. He left an impression on
everyone there that will never be forgotten. Dino was too busy hooking
up with a random chic in the trailor to ride with us. I'll never
forget that day, nor will any of my friends.
BMXStunts:
Do you have a favorite trick?
Jeff: Not really, but the one trick I still get psyched about doing
after all these years is a Rolaid. Aas old as it may be, not many
people can do it. The main reason is it is a little scary. I respect
any rider that can do one. I don't do them often, but when I do
I feel good about it.
BMXStunts:
What are your biggest accomplishments?
Jeff: Teaching students math. I was a teacher for a while in Connecticut.
It is a lot of work teaching kids. I think teaching is one of the
biggest responsibilities a person can have. I can't even compare
it to anything else. I hope to teach again someday, but doubt I
will. There is no freedom to be creative as a teacher. I like to
be creative and enjoy being myself. These are the reasons why I
decided to take a break from teaching. I like to think it is only
a temporary break.
BMXStunts:
Do you have future plans?
Jeff: My only plans are to get a real job so I can someday buy a
house. I don't need to be rich, I just need enough money to buy
little things like an apple pie once in a while.
BMXStunts:
Any last words?
Jeff: Find something you love to do and figure out a way to get
paid doing it.
